If you care about a toxic-free lifestyle, we're with you. We read everything there is to read about chemicals of concern that silently lurk inside clothes, containers, toys, pillows, and more. This article is about what you need to know and the shortcut to select safe tableware to eat and drink from for our kids (and us).

Bisphenols and Phtalates are chemicals commonly found in plastic products (BPAs being only one of them).

Avoiding Bisphenols and Phtalates as much as possible is a good idea because they are hormone disruptors and have been associated with cancer. They can harm our health and that of our kids, even at low levels.

Bisphenols and Phtalates are present in:

  • Canned food liners

  • Plastic containers

  • Vinyl flooring

  • Food packaging

  • Toys and teething toys

  • Sport equipment

  • and more.

Learning about dangerous chemicals can be tedious and scary, but knowing how to implement small meaningful changes in our daily lives really makes a difference long term.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

The people at Six Classes gave us a short set of precise instructions on how to reduce the exposure to these chemicals and, therefore, decreasing health risks.

  • When possible, opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers and tableware, particularly for hot food or liquids.

  • Avoid microwaving plastics.

  • Avoid plastic products marked with recycling codes 3 or 7, which may be made with bisphenols or phthalates.

  • Eat more fresh food and less canned, packaged, and fast food.

  • Avoid handling cash register receipts. If you do touch a cash register receipt, wash your hands afterward.

  • Wash your and your children's hands before eating or drinking.

  • Look for fragrance-free personal care products since the ingredients "fragrance," "perfume," or "parfum" often mean phthalates are present.

  • Tell regulators and manufacturers that you want products without bisphenols and phthalates when possible.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE

If you want to know more, head over to Sixclasses.org from Green Science Policy Institute. They focus on integrated strategies to reduce the use of entire classes of chemicals of concern. For more information on the class of chemicals discusses here, look at the 4th Class: bisphenols & phthalates. We also recommended watching this short video and read this great piece, where the problem is discussed thoroughly.
